Happy Birthday America!

God Bless America Lyrics
by Irving Berlin

God bless America,
Land that I love,
Stand beside her and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans white with foam,
God bless America,
My home, sweet home.
God bless America,
My home, sweet home.

First Photos of Das Kleine Haus...on the prairie

If you read my post yesterday, you know I have decided to move from the farm. I have bought a turn of the century house. It was built by a carpenter, who had immigrated to Texas from Germany, in 1867. His wife, according to the 1880 Census, was born in Norway.

The Haus has a living area, dining room, kitchen and laundry room downstairs, with 2 bedrooms and one bath upstairs. It is very obvious the bathroom was a later addition to the house.

It is in need of much love....luckily the woodwork is in great shape.

Over 100 years old....beautiful wood and original hardware.

.

Floors with loving stress marks from the family that lived in the house so many years ago.

A newel post rubbed to a high patina, from years of hands reaching out for support.

And, kitchen door locks with so much charm.

The first project has started in the kitchen. As always in re-doing older homes, each project usually has one set-back you are not expecting. This ceiling is the back side of the staircase.

It had a few small bubbles the painter wanted to scrape and then smooth with quick set. When the paint started peeling off like wallpaper, it became an entire ceiling wall to repair.

The smaller of two pantries has been painted....the glass door leads into the laundry room.

I hope you will continue to follow me as I prepare to sell the farm and move on to the next phase of my life on The Prairie....

Look Who is the Birthday Girl...

There is a Birthday Girl in our family in July....and that girl is me!

There will be no band playing and no parade. But there will be BIG changes for Meggie on the Prairie.

With the upcoming birthday, I've had to take a hard look at what direction my next step in life will become.

When the first digit on your birthday number changes to a higher number, you realize that your work load may need to be re-adjusted.

So, I've decided to sell the farm and buy something that will free me to explore more of my creative side. I want to have time to sew and paint on canvas again. More time to explore my Scottish ancestry. There will still be decorating projects and a new garden to create.

Starting this week, I will post about my "new" historic turn-of-the-century home. My hopes are that you will continue to follow me on this new journey in my life.

I will still be living on the prairie....just moving a few miles down the road.

Friday's Fences

Some explanation is in order for my photo......

This was taken on the farm in a pasture near the barn. The truth is, I was trying to take a photo of the baby goat. But my camera focused on the fence instead.

The fence has evolved, beginning with a barbed wire fence many years before I purchased the farm. In those first months of ownership, my neighbor just showed up one day and said he was going to stabilize some of my fencing. He installed the twisted vertical stays you see in the photo.

After several years went by, I decided I wanted to buy a pair of goats to help control weeds. That is when the wire fencing was added to the same fence posts.

Show and Tell Cake Stand

As promised in Tuesday Post comments, this is the lovely Shell Pink Milk Glass Pedestal Cake Stand that held the bunch of grapes. It was made by the Jeannette Glass Company , circa late 1950"s.

The 10" diameter top has a starburst in the center, encircled with a raised ribbed and diamond pattern. The raised edge is decorated with hobnails.

Turning the cake plate over, you can see the interesting tear-drop shape raised edge.

A Birthday Cake or Mother's Day Cake would be the center of attention, served on this vintage cake stand.

Hope you have enjoyed another Show and Tell .....

Romance is in the Air

What does romance have to do with a cake stand filled with grapes?

As I reached up to cut the stem on my very own grapes, thoughts rushed through my mind of Italy and the romance I dream of being on holiday there.

Did you happen to see the movie, A Walk in the Clouds ? It is a very romantic movie that includes a vineyard in Napa Valley, California. Not exactly Italy, but it is my imagination I am writing about.

These are the very first table grapes I have grown on the farm. So, I guess if it gives me a euphoric feeling to cut my grapes....I will hold on to that feeling for today!

Monday's Country Backroads

click on photo to see the beauty!
Can you guess what is in the photo? When I look at it, it reminds me of green corduroy fabric. This is a recently cut hay field, located on a side of a hill. It is so perfectly cut that it could have been sketched and painted on canvas.

What I have discovered by living in the country, is the overwhelming beauty that surrounds me. Nature's art is in everything the eye can see.

The country backroad to the farm continues to have wildflowers in bloom, like the Firewheel. You may also know this flower as Indian Blanket.

Isn't she a beauty?
