A Short Drive to a Texas Vineyard

This is a post I had planned to write before Christmas. With all the holiday plans of family visits, I simply ran out of time to post.

The winery is an example of true entrepreneurship. The owner had an idea and pursued that dream of growing her own grapes and making wine.

I thought I might show you what a Texas vineyard looks like during the winter months, with plans to return as the seasons change.

In talking with the owner, she let me know it is not as glamorous as one might think. It is hard work...and, she and her husband do most of the work.

The first big job of the season will be to prune the vines just before spring. Timing is everything. Isn't that the same in our own spring gardens...a late frost can take us by surprise!

The vineyard's Wine Tasting Room, where I bought several bottles of port to give as Christmas gifts.

Last years' grapes I grew at The Farm
I hope you will come back and visit with me, when the grape vines are in bloom....

Romance is in the Air

What does romance have to do with a cake stand filled with grapes?

As I reached up to cut the stem on my very own grapes, thoughts rushed through my mind of Italy and the romance I dream of being on holiday there.

Did you happen to see the movie, A Walk in the Clouds ? It is a very romantic movie that includes a vineyard in Napa Valley, California. Not exactly Italy, but it is my imagination I am writing about.

These are the very first table grapes I have grown on the farm. So, I guess if it gives me a euphoric feeling to cut my grapes....I will hold on to that feeling for today!

Italy or Texas?

As a follower, you know I live in Texas....and you would be correct, the grapes are in my garden. This is the Black Spanish Grape that does so well in Texas. It is great for making wine or jams.

Although I planted grapes last year, this is my first year to have grapes growing on the vines. Last year, was a terrible drought and I lost several plants.

Here are some interesting facts about Texas Wineries:

190 Wineries
America's No. 5 wine and grape producer
220 family-owned vineyards covering 3,700 acres

Texas is the site of the first vineyard established in North America by Franciscan priests, circa 1662.

I don't believe I will get a bottle of wine out of my grapes this year, but I will definitely have a few jars of jam to use with my breakfast biscuits.....
