Have you heard of Dress A Girl Around the World ?
I became acquainted with this program through following the blog, Sew Delightful. I hope you will click on both links...it will open your eyes to a wonderful idea of helping girls around the world.
Several months ago, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue. But, the past six months have been very difficult with the loss of my mother, my children's father, the selling of my beloved farm, and ultimately moving to Das Kleine Haus.
My sewing room is finally set up, and, now it is time to get serious about all the waiting sewing projects.
At this point, the dresses do not have a destination. My daughter is looking towards Guatemala as a good place for them to go. The need is so great and so is the poverty.

For those of you who sew, I hope this post inspires you to join in by sewing a dress for a girl who may never know another "new" dress in her lifetime.....

DeleteI can't help but wonder why little girls in third world countries are required to wear dresses. It seems like it would restrict them when playing ("play is the work of children") especially since they would probably not have any underwear. Shorts and pants would provide more modesty and freedom.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that might be true....this idea is not mine. The organization has delivered over 160,000 dresses. The idea of the style of dress is to give them room to grow into them.
DeleteI do know about this. A quilt store in Lexington, when I was there caring for Kelly, was taking part in this endeavor. They called theirs "pillow case" dresses. I will definitely keep this in mind when I get a spare moment. Beautiful fabrics you've chosen, BTW:-D XOXO
ReplyDeleteHello Susan....I think they orignally started, using the pillow case. I actually took a queen size pillow case to make a pattern. The bias tape straps allow the girl to grow and still use the dress. The fabrics are coming out of "my stash" of fabric.

What a wonderful idea! I have a stash of fabric, but haven't sewn in years. I will be thinking about digging my sewing machine out of moth balls. This would be a perfect winter time project and for such a good cause!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful fabrics and pretty buttons, every little girl deserves at least one pretty dress, I did a few of these last year but made them out of pillowcases.........your dress is lovely Meggie, enjoy your new sewing space.

I found out about Dress A Girl thru Sew Delightful, too, and have been sewing dresses ever since. It is so rewarding and fun. My current dresses will go to Uganda this summer with my state rep for Dress A Girl. happy sewing!
