Vintage Necessary Room

Out of the Past...Blackland Prairie Style

One day, as I was driving the back road to the farmhouse, I happen to see this structure (outdoor toilet) in the distance. I have no idea of the age of this out-building, but it does look like it has been standing here many winters and summers. There appeared to have once been a farmhouse not too far away.

I've had the photo for several weeks, trying to decide on a clever way to present it to you.

Today, I decided to just put it out there and see if you like it.

  1. Dear Meggie, Is that built a closet or something like else. Some old houses, closets are out of the houses. Maybe It can be like that. But where is the main house then..??

    1. Hello Beck...you are correct...it is an outdoor toilet. I believe the house feel apart, leaving just the foundation.

  4. Brings back memories of Girl Scout camp where we had to walk down a path use the "privy". We went in pairs if we had to go in the middle of the night and imagined all sorts of critters along that path. The howl of a coyote would send us screaming back to our sleeping bags!

  5. Yes I am very familiar with these necessaries! ;-) My Granny had one at her farm in Mo and the family homes in Florida in the 60's still had some too. Was rural then not now. My DH was raised with one also on the farm in Virgina. He tells funny stories of moving days for the out house. They had to move from time to time. About 20 or 25 yrs ago this county required all to be torn down and holes filled in even on abandoned run down farms. Danger of folks getting hurt in them.

    1. Hello Elaine....I'm also grateful! The only time I experienced one was at my Grandmother's farm. But, that was enough for me....

  7. Much more aesthetically pleasing than the one I was still using in the 1970s! That used to get slugs inside it- yuk. We also had a tin bath that was brought in on a Sunday night and we got bathed in front of the coal fire. To move from that to a newly built house was just bliss!

  8. I like it. It's like Little House on the Prairie. Alright in the summer but not in winter! Thankyou for the tip about the flower on a winter hat, I'll remember that. Lots of love xxx

  9. We used to have an outdoor toilet when I was a child but thankfully we had an inside one as well.I never liked the outside one because there were spiders in it and that is my biggest phobia!

  10. I have been giving calendars to everyone in the family for many years so I power-shop for calendars. I have run across several outhouse calendars for sale. Actually, I think there must be calendars published on every conceivable interest!

    1. I think you are right, Ms Sparrow. There must be a calendar for any subject. Sometimes great effort goes into the design on the front door of an outhouse!

  11. On a family road trip in the Arkansas hills, we stopped at a gas station with the only bathroom was the outhouse. Evidently some ground wasps had laid claim to it. Needless to say, tears were a plenty and baking soda paste made.
