Military Convoy Stopping for Lunch

I decided to pop in to town for lunch on Friday. Much to my surprise, there was a military convoy traveling towards me on the main road. It is something you rarely see, and I have never encountered in our small community.

Since the beginning of my blog, my camera has become my sidekick. My thoughts were...A perfect opportunity for a post!

After they passed by me, I quickly turned around to follow. In less than 5 minutes, it was obvious they were stopping.

It was a lunch break for them, too!

And, to the surprise of my small town fast food restaurant, Whataburger, they were about to have a full house for lunch.

I quickly went to my favorite eatery, next door, for lunch. Then, I returned to Whataburger parking lot, to watch the convoy leave.

One by one, the soldiers began to walk back to their military vehicles, each carrying a rather large cup of iced drink. It was almost 100 degrees at Noon on Friday.

All lined up...and ready to roll.

The sight of this vehicle brings a tightness in my throat.....

From talking with one of the soldiers, I found out the convoy was returning from a training exercise at Fort Bliss Base, near El Paso, Texas.

I was thinking....What an appropriate place for them to stop for lunch!

  2. Great pictures! Whataburger is a regular stop for us when we're out on the road. We grew up just 40 miles west of Ft. Bliss, in Las Cruces NM.

  3. How nice that you and your camera are so companionable. My camera does not like me! I have very few decent pictures but lots of weird shots of my lap, or the floor or over-lit vague things that I thought were solid objects. This makes my blog sorta boring since I'm stuck with using "borrowed" images or pictures my family has sent me. I truly believe that being good with a camera is an innate talent. And you, lucky lady, have it!

    1. I guess that is one reason for the feeling I got when I saw the medical vehicle. You are correct, they are very brave!

  5. I used to see this a lot as a little girl travelling to my Grandma's who lived in a military area in the UK...all the soldiers used to wave at me....I loved it!!!

    1. When I was a little girl, I saw convoys more often, too! Maybe it was because I lived closer to an army base. I was about 300 yards away when I took the photographs. One soldier reached out the window, called to me, and then waved!

  6. Very cool! I've seen convoys on the Interstate several times. It's always impressive to watch a long line of military vehicles.
