Brown Betty for Thursday Show and Tell

So what is all the excitement about today. My new teapot arrived!

No...it is not an antique, but the Brown Betty does have a long history. Click Here to read some history on tea in the United Kingdom.

The Brown Betty is an iconic type teapot made from British red clay. According to my Internet research, there was a time almost every English household owned a Brown Betty.

Click HERE to link with Cauldon Ceramics, the British manufacturer of my tea pot.

I don't pretend  to know much about "Proper English Tea".  I do enjoy my morning and afternoon cup of green tea.

Even though I have some lovely tea cups....

I prefer my tea in a mug.

  1. I am preferring tea more and more lately - it seems to be more comforting than coffee. I drink tea in a mug secretly too - we crack out the cup and saucer when company arrive however.

    1. I feel the same way about tea. I start the day with it and then, have a cup in the evening. It's very soothing to me. I still drink 1/2 decaf coffee during the day.

  2. I don't drink tea at all, even though I was born and raised British...but I am reliably informed that tea tastes better made in a proper pot!

    1. I read, in the link about "tea in United Kingdom", that tea drinking is on the decline. So I'm not surprised you do not drink tea. Everything I read agrees with you, about the proper pot.

  4. I have moved from coffee to tea this year and really enjoy a cup in the morning and afternoon. PG Tips is my favorite-it's a good black English tea, and reminds me of the tea we drank when we were in Britain. I need a teapot like that!

  5. Hey - we ALWAYS used to have one of those when I was (much) younger. We used to call it 'the teapot' - because that's what everyone seemed to have unless they were very posh (like some elderly aunts of ours, for whom tea was a real ceremony). In more recent years I have been aware of the 'brown betty' label. I think to make proper tea in a pot you must have loose leaf tea and, of course, use a strainer. Warm the pot first. One teaspoon of tea per person + one for the pot, pour on BOILING water and let it stew to the strength you like. Most people use tea bags now though, and make it in a mug - but I've noticed when overseas that tea is often made with warm water and it's just not the same - you do need to pour boiling water over the tea(bag). As for coffee - love a decent cup, but drink less now I've stopped smoking. It's still the best drink after a good meal (with the cheese and port), whereas tea is more a daytime drink for me.

  6. I'm guilty of the tea bags....one of the links I included in the post, indicated that tea drinking has been on the decline, in the UK, for some time now. There is so much competition with all the sports drinks, lattes, and of course, plain coffee. Tea is still my drink of "comfort". By the way, I really enjoyed your post on "Tunbridge Wells....

I have lots of tea pots.. my mother did and passed some on to me.
We always had tea out of a teapot and china cups.
one teapot we never had, was a Brown Betty. I would love to have one.
I love my tea. Nothing better than a good cup of tea. Healthy too.
    Enjoy it.
    happy weekend.

  9. Tea's a bit of an obsession with me. I have a "Brown Betty" that I found in a Gibson store in Kerrville. But since I just one person, my morning tea gets brewed in my 2-cup pot from a potter in Wales. And I always use a mug
