Remembering Our Soldiers

In the United States, we celebrate Memorial Day this week end. The holiday, formerly known as Decoration Day, originated after the American Civil War. The cemetery is about 6 miles from the farm.

Driving the narrow country road, you will find the historical church and cemetery located in the middle of the large group of trees, on the right side of the road.

The cemetery is connected to Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. The sign over the entrance is metal with the words cut out. You can see that some words have the blue sky showing through and some words, are white from the clouds.

Standing in the Older Part of the Cemetery
The oldest part of the cemetery is located towards the back where it is quite wooded. A large cross marks this entrance.

The church is part of the historical Painted Church Tour. I'll give you the grand tour of this church, next week.

This week end is a time to remember all our fallen soldiers and their families.....

  1. I have tears remembering all our fallen heroes. Personally, I have several friends, that I went to high school with, that lost their lives in Viet Nam and I try to be grateful every day for what they gave up in honor of our country.
    Such meaningful photos, Meggie XOXO

  2. Hello Susan....I know some from Viet Nam that had a very difficult time adjusting when they returned home. It took years for them to be OK. I hope you watch the youtube. I chose it because it showed other countries too! And the bagpipes were for my heritage.

  3. Meggie - what a wonderful tribute to the fallen. You have beautifully captured the conflicting emotions of the day and truly honoured the men and women who so deserve to be remembered with pride. The little video at the end with the bagpipe music unleashed my tears.

  5. Hello Meggie. What a beautiful tribute, and such a lovely church and well tended cemetery. I do think that, from what I've seen, your nation is far better at remembering its war dead than ours- you would never find our national flag flying at a cemetery like yours is on the photographs.

    1. Hello Scarlet...We do seem to take care of our cemeteries. And it's not the government that does it. Usually there are groups of women (and men) who get together in a community. They do the lawn care out of love. I'm surprise about your flag....it is so beautiful. My flag is flown each day at the farm.

  8. Lovely photos and touching reminder that Memorial Day is about those who died for our country and not a National BBQ Day!

    1. I totally agree with you, Ms Sparrow. Some Americans have forgotten that it is not just a long week end off from work!

  9. We went to a cemetary in Vermont just along from where we stayed at Rabbit Hill Inn.As Scarlet said the US flag was flying, something we never seem to do here for some reason and it was beautifully kept. There were memorials for the war dead too from what I remember and I took some photos to remind me how beautiful it was.I do think you as Americans are far more patriotic than we as a nation and its one of the things I love about your country.

    1. Hello Anne....thank you for your kind remarks about my country. There are many patriotic Americans, especially in the small towns and communities. The American flag flies 365 days a year. It is not unusual to see it in front of a business or on the front of homes. I noticed today, at the local discount store, there was a big display to purchase.
