Show and Tell From England

Part of the fun in doing a Show and Tell, is the research I do for the item. I've had this particular piece for many years. I knew nothing about it except it was made in England.

My Internet search identified it as "square cake plate". The unusual square shape is what first attracted me to this piece.

The details, on the 12 1/2 inch plate, include delicately painted flowers bordered with gold leaves and raised turquoise dots.

The inner circle appears to be connected with hearts and turquoise petals.

Do you recognize this mark? I wonder what the 1574 represents....Surrey is the pattern.

If you would like to read more about this china, click on Royal Worcester. This link also shows some pieces offered celebrating The Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

What kind of cake can you imagine serving on this beautiful plate?

  1. It's lovely to see a piece of china that's made it's way from my home town to your house! I wonder what stories it could tell from it's journey? Jx

    1. Hello Jan....how exciting for me to know that it comes from your home town. The company makes beautiful china. You now have me wondering how it got in the USA.

  2. Oh my goodness, Jan.....I guess it has been in my home for about 25 years. There must be some good stories to go with it.

    1. It is more beautiful than my photo shows. I've always thought it was an unusual color combination....certainly not dull!

  4. Meggie...confession--I have 7 sets of china, numerous antique serving pieces, and a lovely collection of tea cups, so I'm very envious of this beautiful piece you've shown. I could imagine petit-fours, or a scrumptious raspberry~lemon curd filled cake with coconut frosting (square, of course) or even a plate full of summer fruit tarts, all served with an inviting cup of tea.
Now you see where my mind wanders to, love you, XOXO

  6. That's a beautiful piece of Royal Worcester Meggie, I love the square shape.............don't quote me on this but maybe the number is either how many of this design was made or plate no.1574 that was made of this particular design...........it's very lovely whichever it is. x

  7. What a beautiful plate - I love those touches of turquoise and the little bunches of flowers. I would serve Madeira cake, shortbread fingers, Lemon Drizzle cake - or if it were for a winter tea, perhaps Gingerbread, or a Rich Fruit Cake. I must dash, time to put the kettle on and look in the cake tins...

  8. That plate is too pretty to cover up with a cake! What truly gorgeous detail....you are lucky to own it. Did you purchase it in England or find it in the US? I loved getting a "bird's eye view" of it. But if you have to make a cake for it, my favorite is the Milky Way Cake.....a very old recipe made with milky way candy bars. My recipe calls for ten cent candy bars....that is how old the recipe is! I keep meaning to get it on my side bar but havn't done it yet...I will get on it!
