The Honor System

A bale of hay, two bags of chicken scratch, two bags of laying crumbles and 4 bags of sheep and goat feed.

Now, you may be asking what that has to do with the honor system?

On Saturday, I was running late with errands in town. It became apparent, that I could not get to the Farmer's Co-op before the Noon closing time.

I simply made a phone call...."Hey, Catherine, this is Meggie". You see, in a small town, the shopkeepers and I call each other by our first names.

I gave her a list of what I needed and told her I would pay the next time I came into town.

She, in turn, told me which dock it would be on...and, to look for my receipt secured between the bags of feed.

After loading my order, you can see I wasn't the only one who couldn't get there before closing time. They are on the honor system too!

This is just one of the many things I love about living in the country...

    1. Hi Suzy...I even like the sound of "honor system". It's good to know we can still observe it and take part in it.

  4. It is one of the wonderful sides to living within a 'small' community; it is a great system! I am utterly impressed by your strength and stamina Meggie. No gym work-outs needed for you after hauling those great sacks of feed, plus the bale of hay!

    1. Honor system...it raises your level of belief in humanity. Loading is the down-side of not arriving before they close. But, when I get back to the farm, I back up to the barn door. Would you believe I still pick them up and carry them to the containers. Actually, the bale of hay is easier. I wear leather gloves, and grab the bale by the twine and shuffle on into the barn. Probably not a pretty sight, but I get the job done.

  6. When I holiday in Cornwall there are lots of roadside stalls with ' honesty boxes'. We are just about to book this year's holiday down there - I can't wait!

  7. I know exactly what you mean! In fact, our feed and seed has even delivered some things to me as well as our pharmacy, when I was out of town and could get there to pick it up! I just love living in a small town for reasons like that.

    1. For any downsides, the pluses far outweigh anything else. One day I was picking up my mail at the post office, and my doctor had just walked over from her office to pick up her mail. Small town perks!

    2. I wrote a post on my blog called Our Town...it was comical because I had left a cup at the post office and since it was summer, had been out of town for about a month. The postal clerk KEPT my dirty coffe cup behind the counter for a whole month until I came back in and gave it right back to me...that day went on and on with other small town adventures!
